NFSA conducted six live fire demonstrations to highlight sprinkler system performance under high challenge fire scenarios. Three of the live burns focused on the performance of modern-day fast response residential sprinklers compared to older standard response standard spray sprinklers with increased RTI values. Two of the fires challenged a partial sprinkler system in an unfinished basement and its ability to protect exposed lightweight structural floor joists. One demonstration focused on the value of having the fire department supply the fire department connections, even well after the incipient fire growth stage. We will review each fire scenario, the data collected, and video evidence from these demonstrations to further discuss the potential for future research projects to support revisions to the code and standards. Future NFSA research to directly support the widespread acceptance of the fire sprinkler concept will be presented.
