Side-by-Side Burn Demonstration at the South Metro Fire Department Open House

When:  Sep 23, 2021 from 05:45 PM to 07:00 PM (CT)
This demonstration uses two side-by-side living rooms that are set on fire. One room is protected by a single fire sprinkler; the other room is unprotected. The fires are started in an overflowing trashcan and will ignite nearby curtains and room furnishings. Audience members will see how fast smoke alarms activate and how fast and effective sprinklers contain the fire. In the un-sprinklered room, fire is allowed to grow until the room reaches “flashover” – the point where no one can survive and everything in the room is burning. Audience members will see firsthand how fast and deadly fire is and how little time there is to survive a fire in a home with modern furnishings. The demonstration is truly eye-opening and educational, and audience members will learn important lessons that can help protect themselves, their families, and their homes from a damaging, injurious, or fatal fire event.

Various public fire educators and fire service personnel will be on hand to answer questions and provide fun and educational materials. NFSA Staff from the Minnesota Chapter will narrate the side by side demonstration.
