The text has been divided into 43 chapters and an Annex with each of the chapters grouped into Parts that have a basic theme in the layout, detail, and calculation of a fire sprinkler system. There are four parts of the book roughly corresponding to the order in which decisions are made in the process of getting a sprinkler system into a building. 

The four parts are as follows:

  • Part I — Information and Organization. Chapters 1 through 11 of the text provide background materialand help the reader understand the context in which the fire sprinkler technician performs their job.
  • Part II — Layout of Sprinkler System Equipment. The technician has to make decisions regarding thetype of materials they will use and the quantity of material they will purchase to ensure the sprinkler systemwill function properly. The technician will also have to ensure all this equipment gets installed in theproper location. Chapters 12 through 27 cover this information.
  • Part III — Design Approaches. Chapters 28 through 36 cover the hydraulic calculation of fire sprinklersystems, the sizing and selection of water supplies, pumps, and tanks, and discuss the interface of thesprinkler system with standpipe systems and alarm and supervisory systems.
  • Part IV — Review and Acceptance. Chapters 37 through 42 cover the work that must be done after thelayout and calculation are over. The plans have to be reviewed by one or more Authorities Having Jurisdiction, the materials have to be purchased to install the system, the technician needs to know how todeal with changes that occur during the installation phase of the project, and the system must be properlyinspected, tested, and maintained after installation. Although the technician will probably not get involvedin the inspection, testing or maintenance, they will have to layout the system in such a way that theinspection, testing and maintenance can be done efficiently and correctly.

It is unfortunate, but true; we are exceedingly reactive to fire safety in the United States and, for that matter, the world. We change our regulations only when shocked into doing so; we always seem to ask, “How could this have happened” after major fires. It has been observed that “...fires involving major loss of life have resulted in important changes in building and fire codes and in standard protection and prevention practices.” 

But, if we learn our lessons by studying the past; can we not be proactive in order to assure that history does not repeat itself? The fact of the matter remains “Automatic fire sprinkler use has the ability to solve much of America’s fire problem in every class of occupancy.” Can we not assure that future generations will not be denied the awe of our history because that history was destroyed by fire? Can we not take steps now to assure that historical structures, and their invaluable contents, are provided the protection needed to secure their continued existence for generations to come? Do we not owe this to our descendants so they will not have to ask, “How could this have happened?”

This guide is an examination of the concept of Engineered Life Safety Systems. Each code has an “alternative methods” section, allowing designers to propose less costly options in place of the retrofit of automatic fire sprinklers. One of these options is a conglomeration of systems, both passive and active, called an “engineered life-safety system.” As such, any alternative, such as an engineered life- safety system, must be judged on its ability to stop flashover. It must be virtually identical to fire sprinkler systems in the function of preventing flashover. If that ability cannot be proven, then it is not “equivalent” and, therefore, is not acceptable as an alternative to a full, automatic fire sprinkler system. This guide thoroughly examines this concept and all the aspects one must consider before using this system. Who Needs the EOD Handbook? 

The NFSA’s EOD Handbook is a great resource for fire sprinkler contractors, layout technicians, engineers, authorities having jurisdiction, inspectors, and students.  

Whether you use NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, NFPA 25, and the International Fire Code (IFC) daily or during a plan review, the EOD Handbook is a valuable resource that taps the extensive knowledge of the NFSA experts.   

What is the EOD Handbook? 

This eHandbook provides the entirety of the EOD Handbook covering the topics that are relevant to automatic fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, water supplies, inspection, testing and maintenance, codes, and standards. The questions were asked by NFSA members and answered by NFSA’s subject matter experts through the Expert of the Day (EOD) program and published in a members-only monthly publication called TechNotes.  

The questions and answers in this latest NFSA publication covers every installation standard such as NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, NFPA 13D, NFPA 20, inspection, testing, and maintenance standards such as NFPA 25, fire pumps and water supplies in NFPA 20 and NFPA 24, model fire, building, and life safety codes such as the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101, and many more.  

NFSA subject matter experts represent a broad range of fire sprinkler knowledge and representation in the industry. The NFSA employs professional engineers, NICET certified in water-based layout technicians, NICET certified in inspection and testing, master code professionals and certified building officials experienced in fire sprinkler systems.   

Why use the EOD Handbook?  

The codes and standards on fire sprinkler design and installation are numerous. Every user, experienced or novice, has questions that no minimum code or standard could ever address.
